Luxury houseboat up for grabs

If you’re tired of your old two-up, two down dwellings, there are plenty of more unusual options to choose from. For those who are willing to think outside the box, it’s possible to achieve an eyecatching home that is far from the norm. If you’re looking for a high-spec home in an idyllic location, then you could consider a houseboat.

One Oxfordshire houseboat, currently up for sale for a mere £185,000, offers buyers top-spec accommodation with a difference. All the luxuries of a quality London apartment, including a state of the art bathroom, oak flooring and underfloor heating, come with a riverside view, sun deck and potentially moveable location.

Just one year old, the boat is the perfect home for an adventurous buyer with an eye for comfort. Instead of cramped and draughty as you may expect a houseboat to be, this promises to be warm and comfortable, offering plenty of space and no shortage of luxury features.

The underfloor heating will enhance the natural warmth of the quality oak floors and remove the chill of the river in even the coldest winters, allowing the owners to enjoy their unique location throughout the year.

This choice of home will not be for everyone, however, and another option is to rekindle your love affair with your existing property. Installing underfloor heating is a great way to bring your home up to date, de-clutter and save money on your heating bills. Systems exist for most types of flooring and your installer should be able to advise you on this.

Underfloor heating in Coronation Street

The Ideal Home Show Refit, sponsored by B&Q, is set to demonstrate a sustainable home in arguably the nation’s most famous terrace. Over 250,000 visitors to the Ideal Home Show are expected to view the home of Coronation Street’s Deirdre and Ken Barlow before inspecting an eco-friendly version next door. Green features will include timber floors sourced from 100% sustainable forests, and energy-efficient underfloor heating.

The project is being designed by architect and TV presenter George Clarke. Clarke, star of TV’s ‘The Restoration Man’ said of the project:

“The retrofit is designed to show that whether you’re in a Victorian terrace or a modern penthouse, greening up your home is affordable and possible. Many of the products on show… are both easy to work with and make a real impact into cutting your home’s carbon emissions.”

This is a great example of how underfloor heating is used to create an energy-efficient space that remains in keeping with the original building. Solid wood flooring is found in most standard Victorian terraces and it is reassuring to know that you can retain original features while keeping up with the times.

Underfloor heating is perfect for the high ceilings and narrow rooms of the Victorian terrace, heating directly where it is needed without cluttering or detracting from any of the original features.

The Ideal Home Show is a chance to see this in action, in the nation’s favourite street. George Clarke will also be on hand to offer ‘how-to’ demonstrations and useful advice to visitors.

16th Century Inn has sympathetic modern extension

Underfloor heating today is quickly becoming the heating system of choice in a wide variety of accommodation, ranging from ancient churches, dogs homes and even tree houses. Now it is also to be found in tan Elephant’s Nest.

The Elephant’s Nest in question is a 16th Century inn, located in a quiet corner of Dartmoor and frequented by lovers of good food and authentic atmosphere. The attractive building is adorned with wooden beams and the main bar exposed to a roaring fire. Now, a sympathetic extension has been added to the building, creating room for more guests to stay and enjoy the beautiful location for a little longer.

The extension, clad in local stone, is designed to blend with the old building and offers 3 extra bedrooms on two floors. The lower room opens out onto a patio overlooking the beautiful Dartmoor landscape and all rooms are furnished with underfloor heating to keep away the cold winter chill.

Comfort is a top priority in this attractive inn, and the electric underfloor heating is an added luxury to allow guests to wander barefoot through their accommodation and experience the luxury of a warm floor beneath their feet.

Whether your home or business, extending old buildings always requires a little thought and consideration for the original structure in order not to produce a clash of styles. A sympathetic modern extension, however, can bring a new lease of life to a home which may be a little dark or cramped by today’s standards.

April 14th 2011 | 0 Comments | Home | Installing | Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating systems are essential to live a comfortable life during bone chilling winters. This system of heating homes is indispensable in the colder regions like the UK . From roman times till the present day, there have been different types of heating systems which have gradually evolved over time. And today heating systems have transformed totally as per requirement of modern homes.

Now, people do not like to install bulky heaters in their rooms, opting for something sleek and portable instead. The underfloor heating systems are the first to strike your mind when you talk of sleek, friendly and effective heating systems.. These systems come in different types and are installed under the floor. One can choose heating mats, underfloor water heating systems and cable systems.

There are many benefits of installing these types of underfloor heating systems, four of the major benefits are listed below:

1. Warm your room evenly: These heating systems spread warmth in your room evenly. They are different from conventional heaters which emit heated air and are not capable of warming a room in an even handed way.. These underfloor heating systems circulate warmth in both directions- upwards and downwards.
2. Good for elderly people: These heating systems are beneficial for elderly people who suffer from allergic and asthmatic problems. As they do not circulate air in the room, so there are fewer chances of dust particles spreading out in the room. And so, people suffering from allergy and asthma can easily breathe without any problem.
3. Best for children: Children like to play on floors and you are ever so concerned for them catching cold if exposed to the cold floor for long. But these systems nullify such fears allowing children to freak out on floor! These systems warm the floor and then send the warmth up. Therefore, there is nothing to worry about cold floor.
4. Best for wet areas: By installing underfloor heating systems, you can easily walk bare footed even on wet areas. You can install these systems in your kitchen and bathroom and thus can enjoy warmth everywhere in your home.

Thus, you can see how beneficial these systems are.

Affordable Eco-home announced

If the frequently-mentioned eco-homes sound nice but the prices prohibitive, then the announcement of an affordable eco-home soon to reach the market will be music to your ears.

The 3 bedroom house designed by the ZEDfactory and Stramit Technology Group can be built for just £162,000. The house is highly energy efficient and designed to produce more power than it can consume, allowing the occupants to not only save on fuel bills but even be paid for energy fed back into the national grid.

Bill Dunster OBE, the main architect on the project, commented:

“The house is designed to deliver the maximum benefits for your money.”

The property’s outer walls will contain 3 layers of effective eco-friendly insulation, ensuring minimal energy is needed for heating, which will be sourced from solar water heating situated on the roof. The sun will be used to heat water passing through the solar panels which will then be pumped through the home’s heating system. Water underfloor heating is ideal for solar panels, particularly with solid floors which will hold the naturally-generated heat and gradually release it over time. This means the heat generated during the day will last for some time after the sun has gone down.

And if the owner of this innovative home were to choose underfloor heating, it would also complement the stunning design features built into the property, leaving a space free from unsightly radiators and ready for your imagination to run riot with the money you will have saved.
